Nokia N97
Discover the Nokia N97
The pros: The Nokia N97 has a QWERTY keyboard, touch screen, and 32GB of flash memory inside. This smartphone also has Wi-Fi, 3G support, GPS and an impressive 5-megapixel camera.
The cons: The touch screen user interface is confusing and not consistent or integrated well, especially when you compare it to the competition. A capacitive instead of resistive touch screen would have been better.
The consensus: While the N97 has a lot of features and is unlocked so you can choose your provider, its high price, clumsy touch interface, and old-style operating system make it difficult to recommend when there are so many slicker touch-screen smartphones available. Specs: The provided OS is Symbian 60; the maximum Talk Time is 400 minutes; and you get 32 GB of installed RAM; see the full specs for more.
The price range is $629 to $699; check the current prices for specifics.
More Information:
This summer has turned out to be sizzling hot for smartphones. It's still early, and some very hot devices have already launched, such as the iPhone 3GS, the Palm Pre, and the Google Ion/HTC Magic; now the Nokia N97 NAM can be added to the mix. Ever since it was announced last December, people started comparing it to the iPhone because of its advanced features, touch screen and QWERTY keyboard.
But that was close to 18 months ago, and the N97 is now just becoming available. Since then, lots has changed, and new competition has entered the market, such as the Pre; other phone manufacturers and mobile OS have pushed forward, but Nokia wasn't one of them. That's not to say that the Nokia N97 doesn't have tons of functionality. But it just doesn't match the competition for features anymore. You need good usability and quality hardware, and unfortunately the N97 just falls short in those areas because of its awkward user interface and inferior style touch screen. The high price point doesn't help it either. While Symbian and loyal N series fans might like the Nokia N97, it's got a tough battle to fight against the other touch-screen smartphones already mentioned.
